Petit information; What is the origin of the “Furisode”
(long-sleeved kimono)?
Furisode (long sleeve kimono) is the most gorgeous type of formal Japanese dress that can be worn in festivals and in other formal scenes by unmarried women.
Characteristic of the Furisode are the sleeves "tamoto" which is particularly long.
Opportunity to wear Furisode in this present time is by 20 year old's "coming of age" ceremony followed by banquet of the wedding ceremony.
It was not until the Edo era (1586- 1911) that kimono that we now call furisode first appeared. During the first half of the Edo era, the sleeves of the formal Japanese dresses that women wore became gradually longer. During Genroku era (1688- 1703) the length of a sleeve was approximately from 55cm to 95cm but by the end stage of Edo era (until 1867) the length of a sleeve was approximately from 95cm to 122cm. Ever since the Meiji era (1852- ), the furisode became a gorgeous formal Japanese dress for unmarried women.
